Jumping Ship

Daddy
You ran the ship aground
Expecting me to paddle
In the dirt
I tried to dredge up rocks
To make us go forward
So loyal
So naive
So hopeful
But we just went deeper
Into darkness
I kept looking up
Seeing the sun
On the horizon
On the smooth glass water
I want a ship of my own
Me as captain at the helm
Mighty and powerful
To reach that horizon
Without you
Into the next day
And the next
And the next
There will be no anchor
Only propulsion
No weighty drag.
